The Standells
Inspired by English merseybeat, the young Americans of The Standells adopted
tight suits, boots, rebellious locks and a grimy sound that defined garage rock.
Active from 1962 to 1968, The Standells were one of the genre's major bands, not
least thanks to their one hit, "Dirty Water " (1966), which would influence the
punk movement ten years later.
