A New Orleans-born trumpeter born in 1962, Terence Blanchard got his start in Lionel Hampton's orchestra before joining Art Blakey & the Messengers in 1982, until his departure in 1986. Influenced by hard bop, he developed a personal style in his recordings as a quintet with Donald Harrison, then as leader from 1991. Alongside the albums he recorded under his own name, Terence Blanchard composed extensively for television and film, notably for Spike Lee.
