Luiz Melodia was an influential Brazilian singer and songwriter. He was born
Luiz Carlos dos Santos on January 7, 1951, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. His
music brings together elements of genres like Música popular brasileira (MPB),
samba, soul, and rock. He was the son of samba musician Oswaldo Melodia, whose
stage name he adopted. His musical journey began in the slums of Rio's Estácio
district, known as the "birthplace of samba." He released his debut album Pérola
