La Sandonga are an eight-piece band from Uruguay that plays in the Puerto Rican
plena style. Although this style is not native to Uruguay, it became very
popular in the country as a dance style alongside the candombe and tango, first
appearing in the city of Montevideo in the 1950s. La Sandonga hail from this
city, formed in the neighbourhood of Buceo in 2015. Their singer Paulo Farias is
backed by a brass and percussion ensemble that includes two trumpets (Maxi da
