After leaving Emo band Thirteen Over Eight, Patrick Sissley and Jared Piccone formed their own dance-rock crossover The Takeover in 2006. Later renaming the group Innerpartysystem, the duo were joined by guitarist and keyboard player Kris Barman and keyboardist Jesse Cronan.
