Ashley Frangipane was born September 29, 1994 in Edison, New Jersey. At age 18
she made an anagram of her first name to form her stage name Halsey, and began a
career that made her an indie-inflected synth-heavy pop star. She began
performing in clubs to pay her rent and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder
just a year before. She posted videos of herself performing covers on YouTube,
famously her rendition of Taylor Swift's “I Knew You Were Trouble”. She recorded
