The American jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater was born in Memphis Tennessee but
was raised in Michigan, daughter to Matthew Garrett, a jazz trumpeter. Through
her father's influence she was exposed to music from an early age and by the
time she was 16 she was regularly appearing in clubs in Michigan singing a
mixture of jazz, rock and rhythm 'n' blues.
Whilst attending the University of Illinois she began singing with the
University's jazz band and toured the USSR with them in 1969 gaining valuable
