Gérard was born in Paris on March 7, 1939, under the name Gérard Daniel
Kherlakian. Of Armenian origin on his father's side and Corsican on his
mother's, he grew up in Brazil and then France, where Nino Ferrer taught him to
play guitar. In September 1958, under the influence of American rock'n'roll, he
